1. Five-Minute Quick Start

This chapter alone is enough to create one account and one expense in a new ledger and see the result. No accounting knowledge is required.

The screen at a glance

There are five tabs along the bottom of the app.

TabWhat it does
HomeShows net worth, spending this month, and recent transactions at a glance
LedgerSearch and filter every transaction, as a list or a calendar
EntryRecords a new transaction (expense, income, transfer, refund)
StatisticsShows spending, income, and net worth trends as charts
AssetsManages accounts (bank, savings, investment, cash, credit card)

Screens you use less often — budgets, reports, settings — are reached from the top menu on iPhone, or the sidebar on iPad and Mac.

On iPhone and iPad, you can also select message text or receipt images, choose Share, and pick Tameio to open an entry draft directly. Shared content is never saved automatically; review it on the entry screen and tap Save before it becomes part of the ledger.

Step 1 — Create your first account

Add one account from the Assets tab. A single everyday bank account is enough to start.

  1. Choose Bank as the type.
  2. Enter a name you will recognize in Asset name (for example, "Everyday Checking").
  3. Enter the real balance you have right now in Ledger starting balance.
  4. Save.

From now on this account's balance is recalculated automatically every time you enter a transaction. You will never need to correct the balance by hand.

Step 2 — Enter your first expense

Go to the Entry tab and fill in the following.

  1. Choose Expense in the segmented control at the top.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Choose the account you just created as the payment method.
  4. Choose a category (for example, Food). If the categories the app provides do not suit you, chapter 5 shows how to create your own and reorder them at any time.
  5. Tap Save.

Step 3 — Check the result

  • Open the Ledger tab and the transaction you just entered appears under today's date.
  • The same amount is reflected in spending this month and in recent transactions on the Home tab.
  • Open the account you just created in the Assets tab, and its balance has gone down from the starting balance by the amount you spent.

What to do next

  • To organize categories and tags around your own life, see chapter 5.
  • To set a monthly spending limit, see chapter 6 (budgets — a worked example).
  • To schedule recurring subscriptions and bills automatically, see chapter 7 (recurring rules).
  • To paste or share card approval messages and have fields filled in for you, see chapter 8 (message recognition rules).

The first time you launch the app it goes straight to the Home screen — there is no welcome screen and no separate onboarding flow. Just follow the steps above. A separate recovery screen appears only in the exceptional case where the ledger cannot be opened normally; chapter 12 covers that.
